Actually, it\u2019s five field trips, not<br \/>\nreally a class at all. However, when I proposed it<br \/>\nto Dean Clara Mayer, though she was delighted with<br \/>\nthe idea, she said, \u201cI\u2019ll have to let you know later<br \/>\nwhether or not we\u2019ll give it.\u201d So she spoke to the<br \/>\npresident who couldn\u2019t see why there should be a<br \/>\nclass in mushrooms at the New School. Next she spoke<br \/>\nto Professor MacIvor who lives in Piermont. She<br \/>\nsaid, \u201cWhat do you think about our having a mushroom<br \/>\nclass at the New School?\u201d He said, \u201cFine idea.<br \/>\nNothing more than mushroom identification develops<br \/>\nthe powers of observation.\u201d This remark was relayed<br \/>\nboth to the president and to me. It served to get<br \/>\nthe class into the catalogue and to verbalize for<br \/>\nme my present attitude toward music: it isn\u2019t<br \/>\nuseful, music isn\u2019t, unless it develops our powers<br \/>\nof audition. But most musicians can\u2019t hear a single<br \/>\nsound, they listen only to the relationship between<br \/>\ntwo or more sounds. Music for them has nothing to<br \/>\ndo with their powers of audition, but only to do<br \/>\nwith their powers of observing relationships. In<br \/>\norder to do this, they have to ignore all the crying<br \/>\nbabies, fire engines, telephone bells, coughs, that<br \/>\nhappen to occur during their auditions.
